EXHIBITION SATURDAY 15 NOVEMBER – 22 DECEMBER 2014. 10 am – 6pm

Tallaght Community Arts is pleased to present a solo exhibition I N V O C A T I O N of the work of artist Bernie Masterson. The exhibition is Masterson’s response to stories by former inmates of places of detention and industrial schools, and the betrayal of trust over decades by state and church of the thousands of children placed in their institutional care.

Masterson comes from a painting background but uses moving images, stills, text, and sound to create a multi-layered meaningful form of expression.

This body of work presents a coherent narrative, which moves us from a horror of speaking to the dispossessed in all of us, through a process of assimilation of these experiences and presents the possibility of transcendence. This work resonates with what M.D Higgins writes in the poem Memory. ‘To be removed from memory is to die twice,…(Catalogue introduction essay by Helen O”Donoghue, Irish Museum of Modern Art, Poem Quotation kind permission of Liberty Press)

The exhibition will inhabit two sites and we are fortunate to have the support of Fr Pat Lucey and the Oratory committee to locate one installation work in The Oratory, Unit 12, level 1, The Sq Tallaght, Dublin 24.

Masterson was born in Ballymoney, Co Antrim, Northern Ireland in 1958. She graduated from Limerick School of Art and Design in the 1980’s. She has had solo exhibitions with several galleries e.g. Draiocht Art Centre Dublin, University of Ulster Northern Ireland, Waterford Healing Arts Trust, Custom House Gallery Westport, and the Hunt Museum in Limerick. Masterson has also exhibited abroad – Art Biennial Stockholm, Sweden. Art ’95 New York International Art Exhibition, the Old Library Gallery in Cardiff, Wales and in 2009 with the 126 Gallery in Oakland, California.
