 – Lauren’s House, Oil Pastel on Canvas, 60 cm x 60 xm.

Curated and funded by Tallaght Community Arts

Visual artist Mary Burke has made a series of paintings of the homes of 10 families in the Jobstown area of Tallaght West. The families agreed to have their homes photographed by the artist to use as source material for a series of paintings.

The completed paintings will form an exhibition, HOUSE PORTRAITS, which will be launched in Gallery 2, RUA RED, on March 21st by writer Roddy Doyle.

The exhibition will continue until April 11th and then tour a number of venues in Ireland and the UK. On the conclusion of HOUSE PORTRAITS each family will own the portrait of their home.

As part of this project the families also agreed to be interviewed by sociologist Mary P. Corcoran about their homes,to tell their own stories about what those homes meant to them, materially and symbolically and her findings are included in a book documenting HOUSE PORTRAITS that will be available for sale at the exhibition.

Mary P. Corcoran writes:

“Mary Burke’s work challenges us to rethink our stereotypical casting of suburbia as bland, boring, bleak and desert-like.

She re-frames the iconography of home in West Tallaght through an artist’s lens, giving the viewers and the people who live there a sense of the everyday poetics of lived space”.

HOUSE PORTRAITS has been curated and produced with Tallaght Community Arts.

HOUSE PORTRAITS was exhibited at RUA RED, UCD & NUI Maynooth.

Mary Burke studied Fine Art at NCAD and graduated with an honours BA (1982). She has exhibited extensively both in Ireland and abroad and she has been awarded residencies at the Leighton Artists Colony at the Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada and a United States Information Agency fellowship to work at the Vermont Studio Center, USA. Other awards include two Arts Council bursaries, a bursary from the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation (Montreal), and a special Merit Award from the Golden Fleece Lillias Mitchell Trust. Her work is included in many public and corporate collections including The Arts Council, AIB International Financial Services Centre, Ulster Bank, KBC Bank, Eircom, Dublin Airport Authority, Aer Motive Ireland, South Dublin County Council, Fingal County Council and the Office of Public Works.
